暑假在圖書館的還書推車上，看到這本泰戈爾詩集精裝本，以《漂鳥集》裡一首有名的詩詞「生如夏花」為書名，中英文雙語版，很適合讓孩子在暑假慢慢閱讀欣賞。
回家後孩子看到這本精裝書，立馬翻閱書中詩句，先看中文翻譯，詩句的意境很美，孩子讀到「使生如夏花之絢爛，死如秋葉之靜美」時，不禁發出讚嘆，如何能使人生活到如此境界呢？我好奇地看了原文的詩句“Let life be beautiful like summer flowers and death like autumn leaves.”，跟孩子討論了起來，這句話的翻譯非常適合拿來考驗英文功力與中文造詣。原文裡夏花與秋葉用的是同一個形容詞“beautiful”，但卻能翻譯成「絢爛」與「靜美」之別，若照直譯「活著時像夏天的花一樣美麗，死的時像秋天的葉子一樣美麗」，這樣的翻譯在感受上就跟原譯差太多了。就原文的意思，作者用夏花來比喻人生要活得精彩，仔細觀察大自然的變化，在夏天綻開的花大多是開得毫無忌憚的火紅啊！而秋天時葉子轉黃、凋落，如人生晚年邁向死亡，靜靜地、慢慢地離開。所以好的翻譯可以帶讀者跨越語言的隔闔，不好的翻譯會毀了一個作家的心血結晶啊！
譯者鄭振鐸（1898-1958）是二十世紀前半重要的文人和文學推手。他在1922年翻譯「漂鳥集」、爾後的「新月集」也是由他翻譯，晚年再版時也再重新修正、補譯，其譯本算是泰戈爾詩集中文翻譯最好的版本了。
本書一開始把作者泰戈爾做了詳細的介紹，建議在看詩集前先仔細閱讀作者的生平，這會有助於在閱讀詩句時的感同身受，也有助於了解詩詞的深意。
詩人泰戈爾1861年出生於印度加爾各答，他的父親戴賓德納特·泰戈爾是一位地方上的印度教宗教領袖，也是商人兼地主，印度婆羅門種姓貴族。泰戈爾是家中的第14子，家境富裕，從小接受良好教育，8歲開始寫詩，12歲開始寫劇本，15歲發表了第一首長詩《野花》，17歲發表了敘事詩《詩人的故事》。1878年赴英國倫敦大學學留學，1880年回國專門從事文學活動。他的詩作也成為印度各級學校必選的文學教材，是印度著名詩人、文學家、社會活動家、哲學家和印度民族主義者。1913年，他更以《吉檀迦利》成為第一位獲得諾貝爾文學獎的亞洲人。他的詩中含有深刻的宗教和哲學的見解，其詩在印度享有史詩的地位。
泰戈爾的詩集已超越時空的限制，不論任何ㄧ個世代讀來都能產生共鳴，詩詞述說的情感如此真摯，彷彿我們自身的感受，值得一讀再讀的佳作。
